This spaghetti’s rich and delicious flavor is nothing short of wonderful. This tried and true homemade spaghetti recipe really is perfect!
This spaghetti recipe is my go to recipe for spaghetti! The flavor of this sauce is seriously the best. There is such a depth of flavor to this homemade spaghetti sauce.
If you typically just grab a jar of spaghetti or marinara sauce, I HIGHLY encourage you to try this sauce. It doesn’t take a lot effort to make, either. It’s not anything complicated – the chopping of the garlic and the onion are probably the most difficult aspects of this recipe. I promise that after you try this recipe, you will not want to go back to the jarred stuff!
Sometimes I will make my spaghetti with meatballs (my All Purpose Meatballs) and sometimes I just like the meat right in my sauce. Just depends on how I am feeling that day. I’ve detailed the recipe below with making the meat with the sauce, but also explained what to do if you would rather have meatballs in your spaghetti.
Now my husband likes a thin spaghetti sauce, and I like more of a chunky sauce. We try to compromise, so sometimes I will blend up my tomatoes and sometimes I don’t. If you like your spaghetti sauce thin too, you can absolutely blend up the tomatoes, or even just blend half of them, so you can still have some chunks of tomatoes in there, too.
One thing that I really love about this recipe – it makes a good bit of sauce. So I often freeze half of this recipe and then I have a quick dinner on another night. And boy do I love quick and easy dinners during the week!
I use a little red wine and balsamic vinegar in this recipe. Those two ingredients together really give this sauce a depth of flavor that you just don’t get with a jarred sauce. If you don’t have red wine on hand or don’t drink it, you can use some beef stock or broth. I also use a little brown sugar in this recipe. Most spaghetti or tomato based recipes call for a pinch of granulated sugar in order to balance out the acidity from the tomatoes. But using the brown sugar in this recipe, even though you aren’t using that much, really contributes to the richness of this sauce.
You could also add some mushrooms to this recipe. I love mushrooms in my spaghetti, but my husband hates mushrooms, so I don’t add them to this recipe, which makes me really sad. But this spaghetti recipe makes me very happy. I think it will make you (and your stomach) happy, too.
