This breakfast strata – AKA – breakfast casserole is so delicious and easy to make. It’s perfect for feeding a large family or crowd!
Strata is just a fancy word for a layered casserole. But I like fancy, so I’m going with it. Call it breakfast strata, call it breakfast casserole, call it whatever you want! I just call it delicious and easy!
This recipe is one of my favs. It’s great for when you need to feed a bunch of people for breakfast or brunch. It’s east to throw together, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that it is absolutely scrumptious! One of my favorite things about this recipe, you assemble it the night before, and then pop it in the oven in the morning. No cooking in the morning! Just coffee drinking, and eating! My kind of morning.
Because my weekday mornings are a little hectic and fast paced, I really like to enjoy my weekend mornings. Thus, I like to drink my coffee and just take my time. But my husband is pretty hungry first thing in the morning. So this recipe is great for that. While I’m making my coffee, I am putting this in the oven. I do all of the prep work the night before (which isn’t much). The last thing I feel like doing in the morning is standing over the stove flipping individual pancakes or flipping eggs. I’d rather just drink my coffee and relax.
If you’re having people come over for breakfast or brunch, say for Easter or Christmas, or if you just have family in town, this is such a nice recipe to make. You can actually spend time with your guests or family instead of cooking.
How to make this strata
The night before you make this strata, take some bread (I used about half a loaf of Challah bread), and tear it up or cube it with a knife. Put it in the bottom of a greased casserole dish. You can use a 9×13 or something just a little bit smaller.
Brown your sausage on the stovetop and then drain it. Add the sausage to your bread in the casserole dish. You could also brown up some bacon, chop it up, and throw that in with your sausage (we love breakfast meat and are always on board for bacon!). Then you’ll want to top the bread and sausage with freshly grated cheese. Next, pour your egg mixture over the layers. Cover, and put in the fridge overnight (or 8 hours).
The next morning, take it out and put it in a preheated oven for about 45 – 50 minutes (uncovered) or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If the casserole starts to brown too much, just tint some foil over the top.
Variations to this strata
Make this breakfast strata your own. Add whatever you would like, or whatever your family likes.
Some ideas: bacon, switch up the cheese, some sautéed onions, different herbs, use a different meat – maybe ham or even chorizo. You could also use different types of bread. I like the challah because it’s so airy and fluffy.
Make this recipe with the flavors that you like.
Breakfast really doesn’t get any easier (or tastier) than this! Hope you try this breakfast strata!
