This apple crumble pie is the pie that dreams are made of. It has the perfect amount of sweet and tart. Top with vanilla ice cream and you have the most perfect dessert!
Apple pie is probably my most favorite dessert. I love any dessert that has cinnamon apples in it – and anything with a crumble. So naturally, apple pie crumble is the most perfect dessert.
So whenever my husband and I first started dating, and when I was still learning a lot about cooking and baking, I wanted to make him a dessert. So I made an apple crumble for him – and he absolutely loved it! The only thing was – I used canned apple pie filling and a crumble that I bought in a package, which isn’t terrible – but I used a graham cracker crust. Don’t judge. I really just didn’t know any better, but it was good – and my husband still requests that I use a graham cracker crust for apple crumble. It’s definitely an unexpected flavor combination. But, my baking skills have significantly improved since then. So this is a major upgrade to that apple crumble.
I make my own pie crust. This is the recipe that I use. You can certainly use a store bought piecrust though. Like I have said before, and will continue to say, there are some great store bought pie crusts out there, and no one can really ever tell a difference.
I use a variety of apples for this pie. This really gives the pie a depth of flavor. I use Fuji, Granny Smith, and Honeycrisp. Peel, core, and slice your apples in a uniform manner. I usually slice mine thin, and try to keep all of them around the same size, so that they cook evenly while baking. If you want, after you slice, you can chop them in half so that you don’t have super long slices of apple. Add the lemon juice, spices, flour, sugar, and vanilla to the apples and mix until combined. Set aside. The apples will produce their own juices at this point. Spoon the mixture (don’t dump the apples from the bowl) into the piecrust. You don’t want all of the juices in the piecrust.
Make your crumble and then sprinkle over the apples. Bake and let it sit at room temperature for 3 hours so that the apple filling will thicken up.
Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. SO GOOD! ENJOY!
